How Does One Trade from USA?
« on: Feb 11th, 2010, 6:36pm »

Hi Everyone:

I am from the United States and I would like to begin to arb trade but I hear it might be illegal in the United States. Is there a way I can trade and not get in trouble with the law? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I read an article the other day which said it looks to be legalizing online gambling in the states so you can either wait or move to Nevada or New England.
Actually - not entirely sure that would work...

Good news sir, it is not illegal to gamble on-line from the greatest country ever to have graced planet Earth in her 4 billion + year history the United States of America!

It is, however illegal to ACCEPT wagers in the U.S. You however are the wagerer, not the acceptorer, so you are OK as the law is currently interpreted. You must report gambling winnings to the IRS, and yes, you are allowed to say they are gambling winnings. No harm will befall you! Harm will befall you only if you don't pay your taxes!

However, having said this, you must overcome a couple of obstacles in order to arb from the U.S.

The first is to find bookies that will accept you, since you are  resident of the U.S. Do not look accross the other side of the pond, for they will foresake you. The executives of these firms are too frightened to accept U.S. players, for they know if they step foot in the U.S., they will be ARRESTED, BOOKED, and CHARGED with ILLEGALLY accepting wagers from U.S. residents.

Obstacle number 2 assuming you have found a bookie who will accept you (good ones located in the Carribean or Central America are Greek/Olympic, Matchbook, 5Dimes, BetJamaica et al) is to FUND these accounts. Banks are not allowed to knowingly transfer funds to gambling entities. Same with credit cards. E-wallets such as Neteller and Moneybookers are closed to Americans. Paypal is not allowed to transfer to gambling entities. You must be CREATIVE in your financing. Investigate this issue on google or other sport betting forums.

Then Arb away!

So, your books are extremely limited and you have to pay fees to move money around (slowly).  Nobody suggests that it's not possible to place individual arbs from the USA, just that it's impossible to make anything like the kind of money from it that you can from most other countries.

Blurry, good post, well written, nice to see some class.

It is also nice to see someone with 3 posts helping out a bewbie with 1 post.
One thing whcih I d like to add:"the US Gambling Bill is not stopping US citizens from gambling, it simply prevents US banking institutions from transferring money to Gambling sites."

However, having saying that, most reputable/high profile European, UK & other important bookmakers do not accept US customers, some which are crucial for successful arbing, 2 of which are are on top of that list are: Betfair & Pinnacle. These 2 make up 30% of my arbing turnover.

Not that you couldn't do without them if you had access to some good Asian books (at least for soccer), but sadly the top 4 Asians (SBO, 188, M88, 12Bet) do not accept US clients either.

It may be tricky arbing from the USA .... however, remember that although theoretically UK books are good for arbing their limit us arbers so fast these days that I v given up on them long ago... I do not have one UK book on my list for well over a year.

But it is not all bad news. In the good old days (about 3-4 years ago) in one evening I could do 3-4 good $100 to $300 (profit) NBA and/or MLB arbs from Willhill & Lads and top up with Stan James,Betfred and Bet365 (in those day I could place a $5000 bet @ WH & LADS on any NBA spread which was about 50% of the max bet limit then) ... but those days are long gone and as a result I was forced to develop my arbing skills in new territories such as: developing new arbing formulas, discover hidden arbing opportunities, new sites, new techniques etc... If I wasn't limited then, I probably wouldn't have looked into these opportunities due to having sufficient income and enough low hanging fruits, not having to worry about working too hard on all this fancy staff. So who said that having it easy is always good... hardship is very often a blessing.

In the nutshell what I m trying to tell you is that perhaps as a result of the constraints which are are facing you may find arbing opportunities which I would never dream of and in my view there are many of them still there.

I do not however envy you for the long road ahead of you ... what makes this road even tougher is the fact that you will have to do it all on your own (in this game, there is no one to turn to for help or share your frustration with, you have to crack it all on your own - this business is made of 5% theory & 95% practice), and at present this trip is going to be under tough and ever getting tougher market conditions ... but if you crack it (1000 to 1 probability in my view) then you will find yourself in a game with very high barrier of entry which is good for those who make it.

Good luck anyways

ps. Moving to Canada will solve 90% of the arbing related problems arising from you residence in the US
